Following a series of sold-out performances, Barbershop Uncut Stories returns with a powerful live theatre experience exploring Black men’s health, family, masculinity and the importance of conversations that could help save lives.
Set in the familiar surroundings of a busy local barbershop, the production follows a group of friends whose everyday conversations about football, family and relationships gradually reveal something far more important. Drawing on real lived experiences, the play uses authentic storytelling, warmth and heartfelt moments to open up conversations about prostate cancer, cancer awareness and men’s health.
At the heart of the production is an issue of particular importance to Black communities. According to the event organisers, prostate cancer affects one in four Black men, yet conversations about men’s health can remain difficult because of stigma, fear and mistrust. Through theatre, Barbershop Uncut Stories seeks to break that silence, encourage greater awareness and give audiences the confidence to have potentially life-saving conversations with the men in their lives.
Rather than presenting health information through a traditional talk or presentation, the production places these important issues within recognisable characters, relationships and everyday situations. The result is a compelling piece of theatre designed to entertain while leaving audiences with something meaningful to consider long after the performance has ended.
The choice of a barbershop as the setting is especially significant. Barbershops are often places where friendships are formed, news is exchanged and conversations range from sport and relationships to family and community life. Barbershop Uncut Stories uses this familiar environment to introduce subjects that may otherwise be difficult to discuss openly.
Following the performance, audiences are invited to stay for a relaxed post-show discussion with healthcare professionals and community voices. The discussion provides an opportunity to explore the themes raised during the play, ask questions and learn more about cancer awareness, men’s health, early diagnosis and the importance of knowing your family health history.
Everyone is welcome. Audiences are encouraged to come with friends, family members, colleagues, community groups or their barber. Whether attending for a great night at the theatre, supporting someone they care about or simply wanting to learn something new, the evening has been created to encourage reflection, connection and conversation.
Previous audiences have described the production as “powerful, emotional and incredibly thought-provoking”, with others saying that “everyone should see this.”
Barbershop Uncut Stories is an innovative Creative Health production using theatre to engage communities in conversations about cancer awareness and early diagnosis. By combining authentic storytelling with expert health information, the project aims to break down stigma, challenge myths and empower people to take action for themselves, their families and their communities.
Delivered in partnership with NHS Thames Valley Cancer Alliance, the production offers an important combination of theatre, community engagement and health education during Black History Month 2026.
