This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection + Introduction by Onyeka Igwe

Monday 19th October 2026

A special screening of Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s critically acclaimed drama, introduced by award-winning filmmaker and artist Onyeka Igwe.

Set among the mountains of Lesotho, This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection explores the meaning of home and tradition when a village’s existence is threatened by the forces of progress.

The film follows Mantoa, an 80-year-old widow preparing for the end of her life. She puts her affairs in order and makes arrangements for her burial.

However, when her village is threatened with forced resettlement to make way for a reservoir, Mantoa discovers a new reason to live. She brings her community together and inspires them to resist the destruction of their homes and way of life.

Through her courage and determination, Mantoa becomes a powerful symbol of resistance, ensuring that her story and the memory of her community will live on.

The screening was selected by filmmaker and moving-image artist Onyeka Igwe to celebrate her winning the 2026 Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book Award for June Givanni: The Making of a Pan-African Cinema Archive.

The book celebrates June Givanni’s pioneering work in collecting, cataloguing and preserving African and African diasporic cinema for future generations.

Onyeka Igwe will introduce the screening. Afterwards, audiences are invited to attend a celebratory wine reception and book signing in the Cinema Foyer.

The film is presented in Sotho with English subtitles.
