Black History Month Lecture Series 2022 @ CSEP with Robin Walker

Saturday 8th October

Africa and the Origin and Evolution of Mathematics (28th September 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture on the origin and evolution of mathematics in Africa. He shows that African women in Southern Africa produced the first mathematical artefact in human history 37,000 years ago. He discusses the mathematical contributions of the Ancient Egyptians, the Moors, the scholars of Timbuktu, and the geometrical contributions of Central Africans. In recounting this fascinating story of African achievement, The Black History Man keeps the mathematics simple and accessible. In this way as many people as possible can benefit from this presentation.

Africa and the Origin and Evolution of Architecture (3rd October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture on the origin and evolution of architecture in Africa. He shows that Africa has ancient and mediaeval monuments that hardly any is talking about. African Architecture includes the Pharaonic architecture from the Nile Valley, Sudanic architecture from the West African deserts, Impluvium architecture from the West African coast, so-called ‘Cyclopean’ architecture from Southern Africa, Swahili architecture from the East African coast and distinctive Christian architectural forms in Sudan and Ethiopia.

Ancient Egypt and the Origin of Science and Technology (8th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Ancient Egypt was one of the oldest civilisations in Africa. Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture on the role of Ancient Egypt in the origin and development of astronomy, mathematics, medicine & surgery, navigation & cartography, and architecture. Also at this seminar, Robin Walker, will be relaunching his book Blacks and Science Volume One.

The Mysterious Sciences of the Great Pyramid (10th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

The Great Pyramid of the Egyptian desert has been studied and surveyed by mathematicians and scientists for many hundreds of years. What were their findings? Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture showing what these findings tell us about the state of early African science and technology. Is it true that the great Pyramid encompasses high mathematical and scientific knowledge?

Contributions of early West Africa to Science and Technology (13th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Did you know that 1 million mediaeval manuscripts still survive in West Africa held by Black families and institutions? Did you know that new dietary ideas such as ‘calorie restriction’ and the ‘fast diet’ are actually of ancient West African origins? In this lecture, Robin Walker explores the contributions of early West Africa to the development of architecture and city planning, early university scholarship, astronomy and physics, mining and metallurgy, medicine and surgery, boatbuilding and navigation, and crafts and industry. The lecture shows that early West Africans made important contributions especially in centres such as Timbuktu, Ife, Dogon country, Kano, Kumasi, etcetera. Also at this seminar, Robin Walker, will be relaunching his book Blacks and Science Volume Two.

Contributions of early South and East Africa to Science and Technology (19th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Did you know that many East African houses, built in the 13th century, had bathrooms and toilets? In this lecture, Robin Walker explores the contributions of early South and East Africa to astronomy, mining and metallurgy, medicine and surgery, navigation and boatbuilding, and architecture. The lecture shows that early Africans in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe made important contributions.

Inspirational Contributions of African Americans to Science and Invention (21st October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Did YOU know that a camera invented by a Black American astrophysicist was used during the Apollo 16 space mission to collect ultraviolet images photographed from the moon? African Americans made important contributions to science and invention since the 18th century. Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture that introduces the role of African Americans in the evolution of the Space Sciences, Invention, Mathematics, Medicine and Physics. Also at this seminar, Robin Walker, will be relaunching his book Blacks and Science Volume Three.

African American and Black diasporan contributions to Invention (24th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Did YOU know that by 1913, African Americans help around 1600 patents for various inventions in household goods, industrial machines, transportation, electricity, chemical compounds? Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture that documents the achievements of the greatest of these inventors of the 19th and 20th centuries: Lewis Temple, Jan Matzeliger, Elijah McCoy, Granville Woods, Lewis Latimer, Garett Morgan, et cetera.

African American Contributions to Science (26th October 2022, 7pm to 9 pm)

Did YOU know that Henry Ford described a Black botanist in the 1930s as ‘the greatest living scientist?’ Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture that documents the achievements of the greatest of these scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries: George Washington Carver, Charles Henry Turner, Ernest Just, Lloyd Hall, Lloyd Quarterman, et cetera.
