Robin Walker ‘The Black History Man’ will deliver a lecture on the origin and evolution of architecture in Africa. He shows that Africa has ancient and mediaeval monuments that hardly any is talking about. African Architecture includes the Pharaonic architecture from the Nile Valley, Sudanic architecture from the West African deserts, Impluvium architecture from the West African coast, so-called ‘Cyclopean’ architecture from Southern Africa, Swahili architecture from the East African coast and distinctive Christian architectural forms in Sudan and Ethiopia.

Did you know that new dietary ideas such as ‘calorie restriction’ and the ‘fast diet’ are actually of ancient West African origins? In this lecture, Robin Walker explores the contributions of early West Africa to the development of architecture and city planning, early university scholarship, astronomy and physics, mining and metallurgy, medicine and surgery, boatbuilding and navigation, and crafts and industry. The lecture shows that early West Africans made important contributions especially in centres such as Timbuktu, Ife, Dogon country, Kano, Kumasi, etcetera.
