Join us for this special ‘in conversation’ event where philosopher and historian of ‘race’ Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias C̶o̶l̶e̶m̶a̶n̶ will be interviewed by Prof Nandini Chatterjee about Black British LGBTQIA+ history and culture.

We will discuss the development of Queer cultures as they relate to the African diaspora, Blackness, and Black politics. Nathaniel will discuss his current research into the notorious Section 28 legislation, which sought to outlaw the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ in British schools, as well the history of Pride, the politics of claiming spaces, Queer joy and imaginative art as resistance, and the dangers of appropriation.

We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an engaging and stimulating discussion!

This event is run as part of a new first-year undergraduate module at the University of Exeter: HUM1006, Introduction to Black British Studies. If you’d like to learn more about this exciting, interdisciplinary module, please email Ryan Hanley at r.j.hanley@exeter.ac.uk
