Attend the private view of an exhibition revealing photographs of Brixton’s Black community in the 1960s through the work of art dealer and amateur photographer Charles Gimpel.
Gimpel came to London from France at the end of the Second World War and established himself as a successful Mayfair gallery owner. His professional world included artists such as Henry Moore, Jackson Pollock and Barbara Hepworth.
Alongside his gallery work, he pursued photography. This exhibition focuses on a series of images documenting Black life in Brixton, discovered by his sons and passed to Lambeth Archives.
The photographs preserve everyday experiences and personal moments, offering an opportunity to look closely at the community during the 1960s.
The exhibition runs from 5 to 31 October 2026 during archive opening hours. The booking link above is specifically for the private view on 8 October.
