Join an evening of conversation, creativity, music, food and fellowship celebrating the diverse people, stories and everyday contributions that strengthen Leeds’ Black communities.
Black history cannot be reduced to a single experience or narrative. It is expansive, vibrant and shaped by people of different ages, cultures, backgrounds and life experiences.
Beyond the Monolith: Honouring Our Communities brings people together to celebrate that diversity and recognise the individuals and communities that continue to shape, support and sustain life in Leeds.
Presented under the national Black History Month theme Honouring Our Communities and the wider vision Beyond the Monolith: Black Histories, Diverse Narratives, the event will create space for reflection, connection and celebration.
The evening will include:
Collective and intergenerational dialogue
Participants will explore community resilience, shared wisdom and the importance of creating stronger connections between generations. The conversation will consider what communities can learn from one another and how knowledge, experience and traditions can be carried forward.
Creativity and expression
A collage and painting workshop will invite participants to reflect on their individual and collective stories. Through colour, images and creative expression, attendees can explore identity, heritage, belonging and community.
Joy and fellowship
The programme will also include games, live music and good food, offering an opportunity to relax, meet new people and celebrate the richness and diversity of Black culture.
The event recognises that Black history is created not only through famous figures and major national moments, but also through families, friendships, community organisations and the everyday contributions of people whose work strengthens the places where they live.
Everyone is invited to take part, share their experiences and help celebrate the many stories that make up Black history in Leeds.
