Holbeck Walk, Bus Tour, Exhibition, Celebration

Saturday 25 September 2021

Join us for a jam-packed day-long finalé of our Unseen Histories festival, bringing together Heritage Corner’s pioneering Black history walks, but this time jumping on a open top bus, and donning head-phones, for a whistle-stop tour of Leeds that has never been seen or heard before.

Then, we invite you to Leeds Industrial Museum and Assembly House for sculpture, dance, poetry, photography and more, by 6 bold and brilliant Black artists. Each artist is creating something brand-new exploring their own life experiences, Black communities in Leeds and Leeds’ rich black history. There will also be food, drinks and music.

You can join us for the bus tour and exhibition or just the exhibition.]

Please note the first part of the event includes a short walk around Holbeck, before getting on the bus. There will also be a short walk from Leeds Industrial Museum and Assembly House.

The Black history tour is created and performed by Joe Williams. The exhibition and performances are curated by Joe Williams and features: Complex Simplicity, Ijeme Bare, Musufing Marong, Orange Ibreck and Abdullah Adekola.

Unseen Histories is a month-long festival, running throughout September, of artworks and events exploring Black British history in Leeds. The festival is curated by Black artists in and around the city, with support from Heritage Corner, pioneers of the Leeds Black History Walk and Assembly House, an artist studios and project space in Armley, Leeds.

The industrial revolution included contributions of peoples from different parts of the world, many of whom are represented in Leeds today – how can we celebrate inclusion in the telling of these narratives?

Many communities are excluded from the knowledge about the richness and success of Black history and culture in Leeds, the festival aims to give access to this history in unconventional and artistic ways, hoping to engage with the wider community.
