twelve seasons’ is a composition by Martin Nutt and Ryoko Akama, executed from the 12 months’ postal exchange between Kobe (JP) and Huddersfield (UK). The piece is composed of 24 postcards embodying seasonal aural experiences. The day presents Cooper and Akamas’ actualisation of the score. The audience is invited to a sound-walk between two venues, actively asked to participate in the performance.

You are welcome to attend one performance at The Tetley or Leftbank, or join in the entire journey and participate in the performance. This is a new way to listen to and explore Leeds, which is full of nature and industrial history.

Once you book your place, you will receive an e-booklet to print at home for more information.

:BIOGRAPHY:

Ed Cooper – is a composer and artist based in Leeds, UK. Encompassing deep-listening techniques, temporal aesthetics, and musical fragility, his interdisciplinary practice centres on liminality — the functions and dimensions of the ‘in- between’. Specifically, it explores how a liminal state might not rely on stable phenomena to transition between, but these areas of ambiguity might move from being a passageway and to a productive site in and of themselves: instability precedes stability and fixity. He is currently studying a practice-led PhD at the University of Leeds, supervised by Martin Iddon and Scott McLaughlin; this is fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, through the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH).

Ryoko Akama – works with installations and sounds who approaches listening situations that magnify silence, time and space. Her sculptural work engages with mundane objects and invisible energies such as magnetism and gravity, employing small and fragile objects such as paper balloons and glass bottles in order to create tiny aural and visual occurrences that embody ‘almost nothing’ aesthetics. She also composes text scores and performs a diversity of alternative scores in collaboration with other artists and musicians. She is an artistic director for ame and co-runs the independent publisher mumei publishing and melange edition. www.ryokoakama.com
