Reel Histories is a bold and compelling film programme created for Black History Month 2025. It celebrates and amplifies the cinematic legacies of Black communities across the world, offering a space for audiences to explore histories, experiences and movements that have often been overlooked or underrepresented.
The programme showcases an array of films that reflect on personal and collective memory, resistance and the power of identity.
Through poetic reflections on the Windrush generation to accounts of revolutionary activism in the Caribbean, South America and the UK, Reel Histories presents stories that challenge conventional narratives. These films explore vital themes of visibility, cultural heritage and political struggle. By bringing together a mix of narrative, documentary and short film, the programme encourages deeper engagement with Black histories and the art of filmmaking itself.
One of the programme’s standout titles is Marighella, a film that captures the final years in the life of Carlos Marighella — a Brazilian writer, politician and revolutionary who stood against military dictatorship. Banned from release in Brazil upon completion, the film has gained international attention and acclaim, with official selections at the Berlin, Stockholm and Seattle International Film Festivals. It tells a story of political courage and the personal cost of resistance, powerfully portrayed through a tense and emotional narrative.
Reel Histories is more than a film series; it is a platform for discussion, reflection and community. Alongside screenings, the programme includes in-conversation events and a special launch for Black History Month 2025. It aims to create a space where stories, past and present, are shared and valued, sparking new understanding and dialogue among audiences.
Tickets for individual screenings are priced at £10, with a concession rate of £8, plus a £1 booking fee. For those wishing to experience the full programme, the Reel Histories Pass is available for £45. This includes access to all screenings, in-conversation events, the Black History Month Official Launch and a complimentary drink at each event.
