Zimbabwean-born singer, musician and storyteller Anna Mudeka brings to life the extraordinary journey of Miriam Makeba, the South African singer, songwriter and civil rights activist. In this powerful solo performance, Mama Afrika traces Makeba’s rise from the townships of Johannesburg to international stardom, as well as her unwavering commitment to justice, which led to exile and worldwide recognition.
Told through four distinct character incarnations, the show explores a life shaped by adversity, resilience and courage. From personal loss to political resistance, Anna Mudeka captures the strength and spirit of Makeba, whose music became a symbol of freedom. Iconic songs such as Mbube, Pata Pata and Soweto Blues feature throughout the performance, celebrating the passion and pride that earned her the name “Mama Afrika”.
The production is a celebration of African creative talent. The script is written by Zimbabwean writer Tomas Lutuli Brickhill, with musical direction by John Vigar from Totena Music. The vibrant backing soundtrack is recorded by Zimbabwean multi-instrumentalist Ziva Guveya, and the piece is directed by Tonia Daley-Campbell.
Mama Afrika is more than a musical biography. It is a heartfelt story of identity, heritage and endurance. It captures the essence of a woman who inspired millions through her art and activism, and who never gave up on her people or her voice.
Produced by Arts La’Olam, the show was originally co-commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre and supported by Arts Council England, The Makeba Foundation and Norwich Theatre. It is a tribute to legacy, to music, and to the enduring power of one woman’s voice to change the world.
For those who know Makeba’s music and those discovering it for the first time, Mama Afrika is a moving, unforgettable performance that resonates deeply with audiences of all generations.
