Masterclass with Nick Makoha: The Black Ekphrastic Mode

Friday 15th May 2026

Join award-winning poet and playwright Dr Nick Makoha for a dynamic poetry masterclass exploring The Black Ekphrastic Mode—a bold creative practice that reimagines art, music and place through a Black cultural lens.

Delivered as part of the Bad Betty Press masterclass series, this session offers a unique opportunity to work closely with one of the UK’s leading contemporary Black poets. Through guided prompts and creative exercises, participants will develop original writing inspired by music, visual art and architecture.

The workshop encourages poets to engage critically with the Western canon while developing their own voice, exploring how poetry can respond to image, sound and memory. Participants will also gain insight into Makoha’s work, including themes from his collection The New Carthaginians, which explores identity, migration and the Black gaze.

Suitable for writers at all levels, the session offers a supportive and exploratory environment for creative development, experimentation and discussion.

Hosted at New Art Exchange, the UK’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary visual arts from the Global Ethnic Majority, the event reflects a wider commitment to inclusivity and representation in the arts.
