Powerful Portraits: A Photography Workshop

Saturday 24th October 2026

Explore photography, representation and self-image through a practical workshop inspired by Frederick Douglass, one of the most photographed people of the nineteenth century.

Inspired by the exhibition Lessons of the Hour, this hands-on workshop explores how Frederick Douglass used photography to shape his public identity, challenge racist representations and communicate his vision of freedom and equality.

Participants will learn about photographic techniques from Douglass’s lifetime and discover how the developing medium became a powerful tool for representation and social change.

Working collaboratively from both sides of the lens, participants will take turns as photographer and portrait sitter while creating their own self-led portraits.

The workshop includes an opportunity to use a traditional large-format wooden bellows camera, complete with a ground-glass screen and dark cloth. Participants will also explore the role of natural light in portraiture and receive an introduction to silver-based photographic processes.

During the workshop, participants will:

  • Take turns as photographer and portrait sitter
  • Use a traditional large-format bellows camera
  • Learn about Victorian photographic techniques
  • Explore how natural light can shape a portrait
  • Discover how Frederick Douglass used photography and representation
  • Develop paper negatives in the community darkroom
  • Create photographs that will be digitised and emailed after the workshop

No previous photography or darkroom experience is required. All materials and equipment will be provided.
