A powerful new event in Derby is set to honour the often-overlooked legacy of Windrush women — and mark the much-anticipated return of Sisters Talk, a community space created by and for Black women of African and African-Caribbean heritage.
Taking place on Sunday 22 June 2025 at Bramblebrook Community Centre, Sisters Talk: Windrush Women Remembrance brings together storytelling, poetry, and wellness under one roof. The event is free, child-friendly, and supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, with booking required in advance.
The highlight of the afternoon will be a live reading from the author of Sheep Sheep Come Home, a poignant and powerful story capturing the Windrush experience through the eyes of a young girl growing up in Britain. The reading promises to offer a unique, personal lens on a shared historical journey that shaped generations.
Also on the programme is original poetry from descendants of the Windrush generation, offering reflections on Black love, legacy, and belonging. These performances aim to connect past and present through creative expression — acknowledging both the struggles and triumphs of those who paved the way.
In addition to the cultural elements, the launch will introduce new strands of the Sisters Talk programme focused on wellbeing, healing, and financial empowerment — topics identified as vital by the women in the community.
Organisers say the relaunch couldn’t come at a more crucial time.
“This is about creating space — for reflection, for connection, and for growth,” said organiser Tomar. “Windrush women have carried so much, often without recognition. This event is a chance to honour them, share stories, and introduce what’s next for Sisters Talk as we grow together.”
Sisters Talk: Windrush Women Remembrance runs from 3PM to 6PM at Bramblebrook Community Centre, Derby, DE22 3WH. Attendees can expect a welcoming atmosphere, light refreshments, and a chance to connect with others committed to community and culture.
