EXIT/EXIST

Thursday 29th October & Friday 30th October 2015

Featuring the music of Simphiwe Dana performed live.

Exit/Exist tells the story of South African dancer Gregory Maqoma’s 18th-century ancestor Chief Maqoma. Born in 1798, the Chief was a respected warrior who lost his land in conflict with the British, was subsequently imprisoned, and died on Robben Island.

Maqoma is an extraordinary dancer who can combine African dance rhythms with European contemporary styles. He is a constant demand around the world for his dynamic and exciting dancing.

The soaring vocals of four South African singers accompany fusion guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, who together perform a score by internationally renowned composer Simphiwe Dana, winner of two Metro FM Music Awards.   The music weaves throughout Maqoma’s vibrant kinetic world, illuminating his exploration of race and power.

“Exit/Exist was thoroughly hypnotic – thanks not only to Maqoma’s virtuosity, but also the gorgeous harmonies and anguished lamentations of the four-man South African vocal ensemble.”  – Seattle Times
