Byron Wallen’s GAYAN Gamelan Ensemble

Sunday 21 November 2021

Byron Wallen’s inspired homage to a milestone of electronic music brings the legendary British trumpeter together with Javanese gamelan, a crack jazz ensemble and analogue synthesizers.

Music Has the Right to Children stands as the reclusive Scottish duo Boards of Canada’s magnum opus, all the more impressive for being their debut record.

Wallen’s gamelan orchestration marries unexpectedly and beautifully with the album’s woozy meditations on childhood, tinted with rosy pastoralism and filtered through hazy electronics.

A meeting of musical worlds, pulled together by Wallen’s brilliance as a performer and improviser at its centre, the project debuted over two sold out nights at London’s Jazz Café to mark the 20th anniversary of the album’s release.
