As part of this year’s Windrush Day commemorations, a special filmed project is taking place in Newham to capture the personal stories, memories, and achievements of the Windrush Generation and their descendants. This is a rare opportunity to reflect on lived experiences and preserve them for future generations.
Local artist Marilyn Fontaine will lead the interviews, creating a welcoming space in which participants can share their journeys, family histories, and the everyday moments that have shaped their lives. Whether it’s a story of arrival, a memory of home, or a personal or family achievement, each contribution adds to the wider story of migration, resilience, and identity in Britain.
This project is specifically for members of the Windrush Generation and their descendants. With a limited number of interview slots available, priority will be given to ensure that those with direct connections to Windrush are included. This ensures that every session honours the legacy of those who arrived and the generations that followed.
Participants are encouraged to bring an item or photograph of personal significance on the day—something that holds meaning or tells a story. These objects will help spark conversation and provide context, adding further depth to the recorded memories.
Filming will take place in a warm and supportive setting, with care taken to ensure participants feel comfortable throughout the process. The resulting archive will stand as a powerful testament to the lives and voices of Newham’s Windrush community—something to be treasured by future generations and valued as part of local and national history.
