Black Is the Color of My Voice

Friday 24 – Saturday 25 April 2026

Black Is the Color of My Voice is a spellbinding, deeply human solo play inspired by the life of the legendary Nina Simone. Combining theatre, storytelling and live performance of her most iconic songs, the production pays tribute to one of the most distinctive and influential musical voices of the twentieth century — a woman whose artistry, activism and uncompromising spirit reshaped American culture.

Written and performed by Apphia Campbell, the play follows a celebrated singer and civil rights activist seeking spiritual clarity after the sudden death of her father — the figure who first recognised her talent and nurtured her early musical ambitions. Over the course of one intimate night, she reflects on her life: from her childhood as a gifted piano prodigy destined for the ministry, to her discovery of jazz, her transformation into an international star, and her evolution into one of the most powerful artistic voices of the Civil Rights Movement.

Campbell’s storytelling takes audiences inside the emotional and political landscape that shaped Simone’s rise — the racism she endured, the expectations placed upon her as a Black woman artist, the pressure of fame, and the fire that fuelled her activism. With honesty and vulnerability, the play reveals the struggles behind the music, illuminating Simone’s search for autonomy, dignity and creative freedom.

Featuring live performances of Simone’s unforgettable repertoire, including spirituals, protest songs and jazz standards, the show captures the raw power of her musical legacy. It celebrates her contributions to the global fight for equality, her ability to give voice to collective grief and resistance, and the deep personal cost of carrying that responsibility.

Having toured the UK and Australia to standing ovations, Black Is the Color of My Voice has enjoyed sell-out runs in Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh, and London’s West End. It was awarded the Best Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe 2024, cementing its place as one of the most acclaimed solo shows of the last decade.
