Exploring Black British Literature – Live! with Malorie Blackman

Friday 22 May 2026

Join literary icon and former Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman for a special interactive event at the British Library. Exploring Black British Literature – Live! brings the library’s extensive archives to life, celebrating the authors who have defined and redefined the literary landscape of the UK.

In a unique format, students and emerging writers will take to the stage to “champion” the Black British author they believe has had the most profound cultural impact—drawing on rare manuscripts and first editions from the Library’s collection to make their case. The event is designed to amplify the voices of the next generation while honouring the giants upon whose shoulders they stand.

Malorie Blackman, author of the ground-breaking Noughts & Crosses series, will close the evening with a keynote discussion on her own literary heroes, her journey through the publishing industry, and the importance of seeing oneself reflected in the stories we read.
