Black Classics in Concert, taking place on Thursday 1st October 2026 at Leicester Cathedral, brings together opera, song and spirituals in a programme curated by Alison Buchanan, Artistic Director of Pegasus Opera Company.
The concert honours both historic and contemporary Black composers whose work has shaped and expanded the classical canon. By placing their compositions at the centre of the Black History Month launch, the event foregrounds a tradition of excellence that has often been overlooked within mainstream narratives of classical music.
Under Alison Buchanan’s direction, an accomplished line-up of singers will perform works that reflect the breadth and depth of Black musical contribution — from operatic repertoire to spirituals and art song.
The programme also embraces a broader interpretation of the term “classics”, recognising music across genres that has stood the test of time and continues to resonate across generations.
A Launch Moment for October 2026
Held at Leicester Cathedral, the concert forms part of the city’s official Black History Month 2026 launch programme. It follows the afternoon’s Black Classics Symposium at the Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage, creating a full day of discussion and performance to mark the beginning of October’s programme.
As Black History Month 2026 begins, Black Classics in Concert sets the tone for a month dedicated to heritage, creativity and recognition.
