Join a one-day symposium exploring the past, present and future of Black theatre and performance, bringing together scholars, artists and practitioners from across the UK and internationally.
Organised in collaboration with leading academic and cultural institutions, this event celebrates the legacy of Yvonne Brewster, co-founder of Talawa Theatre Company, whose work helped shape Black British and Caribbean theatre.
The symposium examines how Black theatre has evolved over time, from historical developments to contemporary performance, while addressing ongoing challenges around visibility, representation and cultural recognition.
Through keynote talks, panel discussions and presentations, the programme explores themes including:
- Black reinterpretations of classical and canonical works
- African and diasporic theatre traditions
- The role of performance in shaping identity and political expression
- New directions in digital and contemporary theatre practice
Featuring contributions from academics, playwrights and theatre-makers, the event creates a space for dialogue, research and creative exchange.
With both in-person and hybrid elements, the symposium offers an accessible opportunity to engage with cutting-edge discussions on Black performance and its global influence.
