St Cross South African Township Music Concert brings the vibrant sounds and history of South African township music to Oxford for a special performance celebrating Black History Month 2026.
Taking place in Pusey House Chapel, the hour-long concert will be performed by South African singers Luyanda Jezile and Prudence Jezile, founding members of Imbube UK.
South African township music emerged from the experiences of Black communities living within racially segregated urban areas during the twentieth century. Drawing together traditional African vocal harmonies and rhythms with influences including jazz, swing, pop and R&B, the music developed a distinctive sound that reflected both everyday life and the political realities of apartheid.
Music became far more than entertainment. Across generations it provided a means of cultural expression, community connection and resistance, enabling artists and audiences to maintain identity and solidarity in the face of oppression.
Luyanda Jezile is a singer, musical director and choir leader whose career has included appearing in the original London cast of The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre. He has also performed at major events and alongside internationally recognised musicians.
Prudence Jezile, who performs as LadyPruu, established her career in South Africa before performing internationally. Her stage work has included an appearance in Mandela: The New Musical at London’s Young Vic, and she also performs with the London African Gospel Choir.
Together, the performers will introduce Oxford audiences to the richness of South African township music while highlighting the history, creativity and resilience from which the musical tradition developed.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, the concert offers an opportunity to experience Black history through music while celebrating the cultural traditions that helped communities express identity, resistance and hope.
