Explore the stories of Black British ballet dancers through poetry, criticism, blogging and creative writing in this free workshop at Pendleton Library.
Are you a poet, critic, blogger or someone who simply enjoys experimenting with words?
This creative writing workshop invites participants to travel through the history of Black British ballet and discover the experiences of dancers whose talent, determination and creativity helped challenge barriers within the profession.
Using photographs and quotations from the Black British Ballet exhibition as a starting point, the group will explore the choices and challenges faced by Black dancers before creating their own piece of writing.
The session will begin with a group activity designed to bring some of the dancers’ experiences to life. This will be followed by a conversation about ballet and what participants already know or think about the art form.
A short presentation will introduce the history of Black dancers in British ballet. Participants will also have an opportunity to view the accompanying exhibition or use specially prepared printed materials.
Everyone will then be offered a choice of individual writing exercises. You might create a poem, review, blog post, personal response or something completely unexpected. There will be an opportunity to share finished work at the end, although nobody will be required to read aloud.
The workshop is suitable for people aged 16 and over.
Admission is free, but advance booking is required.
