Join award-winning hairstylist and author Charlotte Mensah for a hands-on family celebration of Black hair, creativity, memory and identity.
Bringing Charlotte Mensah’s personal archive into conversation with objects from the Horniman Museum’s Handling Collection, this interactive event explores the rituals, skills and stories connected to Black hair.
Families can learn practical haircare and styling techniques through three drop-in Curl Power mini masterclasses:
- 11am – Care: Detangle and Diffuse
- 12.30pm – Craft: Plait, Braid & Style
- 2.30pm – Adorn: Accessories and Hair
Each mini masterclass lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Inspired by Charlotte’s 40 years of experience in hairdressing, the event celebrates hair as an expression of culture, family, care and personal identity.
Alongside the masterclasses, visitors can explore archive materials and museum objects, make their own zines, take part in conversations between parents, carers and children, and contribute to family portraiture and a growing digital archive.
The event is open to families from all backgrounds and welcomes every hair type. Activities are suggested for children and young people aged three to 18.
Tickets cost £5 for an adult or £5 for an adult and child. Both the accompanying adult and child must have a ticket. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Advance booking is recommended.
