Experience the acclaimed play Black Is The Color Of My Voice, inspired by the life of legendary singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone.
Written and performed by Apphia Campbell, this powerful one-woman show follows a successful jazz singer as she reflects on her life and career following the untimely death of her father. Through music and storytelling, the performance traces her journey from a young piano prodigy destined for the church to becoming a celebrated artist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.
Featuring many of Nina Simone’s most iconic songs performed live, the production blends theatre and music to explore themes of identity, race, resilience and artistic expression. The show has received widespread critical acclaim and has toured internationally, with sell-out performances in Adelaide, Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and London’s West End.
Winner of the Best Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe 2024, the production has been praised for its emotional depth and compelling performance, offering audiences an intimate and moving theatrical experience.
Returning to Bristol Old Vic as part of its 2026 programme, this production offers a unique opportunity to experience a story inspired by one of the most influential voices in music and civil rights history.
