Windrush 75: A Lambeth Story

The MHT Empire Windrush Docked at Tilbury on 22 June 1948. Onboard were 492 passengers the majority from the Caribbean.

 

A Guided tour dedicated and commemorated to the Windrush Pioneers who arrived at Tilbury on 22 June 1948.

Their stories have been told a number of times and will continue to be told. 75 years ago they answered a call , and came to help rebuild Britain after the 2nd World War.

They were housed in the deep underground shelter at Clapham South, many made their way to the Labour Exchange in Coldharbour Lane. Many settled in Brixton.

The tour will will begin at Windrush Square, then a walk in the footsteps of the Windrush Pioneers to Coldharbour Lane and Somerleyton Road.

The Windrush Generation has a strong and lasting legacy in Lambeth, this is their story!
