In conversation with Baroness Lawrence

Thursday 2th May

Baroness Doreen Lawrence was awarded the OBE for services to community relations in 2003 and was subsequently made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2013. She has won praise for her tireless dedication to community, anti-racism and other causes close to her heart and in 2014, she was named the most powerful woman in the country by the BBC.

Baroness Lawrence continues to advocate and provide a voice for the voiceless with her continued commitment to inequalities in societies globally, and she supports many good causes and initiatives that provide opportunities to young people, that were tragically denied to her son Stephen by his senseless murder in 1993.

Her efforts in seeking justice for Stephen’s murder have seen her ongoing commitment lead to an investigation into claims of police corruption and, for her, the changes in policing remain ‘only partly done’ in her wish to see Britain become a fair, just and tolerant society for all.

In 2020, Baroness Lawrence establish the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation where she is continuing to provide a legacy of hope for young people, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, through my work at The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation.

The Foundation exists to inspire a more equitable, inclusive society and to foster opportunities for marginalised young people in the UK.

The Foundation works in classrooms, inspiring children to dream freely without barriers and to understand the importance of learning in attaining those dreams. In communities, it aims to support and create new connections within all types of communities. And in careers, it strives to give marginalised young people access to professional opportunities across a broad range of sectors and industries.

The Foundation is committed to creating a fairer society in which all young people, regardless of their background, have the chance to flourish. By providing mentoring, coaching, work experience opportunities, and bursaries for education and training, the Foundation broadens young people’s views of what’s possible and creates pathways into education and career opportunities which might not otherwise be available to them.

Young people are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications they need to pursue the career of their choice, and then support them in progressing along their chosen path.

Baroness Lawrence was elected to a Honorary Fellowship of Murray Edwards College in 2019.
