This June, we are honoured to welcome one of the most iconic and enduring names in reggae music—Black Uhuru—for an exclusive one-night performance that promises to be nothing short of legendary.
Formed in the early 1970s in the vibrant Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica, Black Uhuru was the brainchild of Derrick “Duckie” Simpson, affectionately known as the Gong Gong Gullie. What began as a local act soon transformed into a global sensation with the release of their debut album Love Crisis in 1977, recorded at the famed Prince Jammy’s studio.
Their rise to international fame was accelerated when they teamed up with two of reggae’s most celebrated rhythm makers—drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare. Together, they helped shape Black Uhuru’s unmistakable sound: a hypnotic fusion of deep, rolling basslines, sharp keyboard strikes, extended guitar riffs, dub echos, and the group’s hallmark “woh oh oh” vocal refrains.
Their catalogue of hits is a testament to the power and poetry of reggae music, featuring classics such as I Love King Selassie, Shine Eye Gal, General Penitentiary, and What Is Life. Their music not only defined a generation but also carried the spirit of Jamaica across the globe.
Whether you’re a lifelong reggae lover or simply looking to experience the heartbeat of roots music live and direct, this is a night not to be missed.
