Experience TWAWsi: The World As We See It, a powerful double bill from ACE dance and music, redefining contemporary dance from the African Diaspora through two striking and thought-provoking performances.
This compelling production brings together contrasting yet interconnected visions of the modern world, exploring humanity, identity and our relationship with each other and the environment through movement, storytelling and physical expression.
The programme features Echoes of Dust, choreographed by Serge Aimé Coulibaly with creative contributions from Sigué Sayouba. Set in a world fractured by conflict, disaster and the breakdown of human connection, the piece follows seven individuals navigating chaos and uncertainty. As they struggle to survive, fragments of identity and voice begin to re-emerge, creating a powerful reflection on resilience, memory and hope in times of crisis.
The second work, Letlalo, choreographed by Vincent Mantsoe, takes its name from the Sotho word for “skin” and draws deeply from African, Indigenous and contemporary dance traditions. Rooted in ancestral knowledge and inspired by nomadic cultures, the piece explores the connection between humanity and the natural world. Through fluid movement and symbolic storytelling, it reflects on unity, spirituality and the deeper essence of human existence.
Together, these two works create a rich and immersive dance experience, blending physical intensity with emotional depth. The production offers a contemporary perspective on global challenges while remaining grounded in cultural heritage and collective identity.
Presented at Hackney Empire, this performance forms part of a wider celebration of diverse voices in the arts, making it especially resonant during Black History Month.
