Join us for a special evening of conversation, reminiscence and celebration to mark the closing of our critically acclaimed exhibition Miss Black & Beautiful.
We begin with a unique opportunity to meet former beauty queens and models in Raphael Albert’s photographs from the 1970s and 80s. Our special guests include Sybil McLean Miss Black & Beautiful 1972, Denise Richards Miss Teenage of the West Indies in Great Britain 1979, Joan Lewis Model of the Year 1980, and dancer Holly Allen-Smith, whose portrait features prominently in a series of Albert’s photographs from 1974. The four models will be joined by the late photographers’ daughter Susan Ibuanopke as well as Gloria Bedeau, who was married to Raphael Albert from 1981 – 1993 and remained friends until his death in 2009.
This will be followed by a drinks reception in the gallery, including a free glass of Jamaican Planter’s Rum Punch and a 1970’s Classic Reggae & Lovers Rock sound track, both courtesy of Derek Bishton.
The evening’s conversation, including a Q&A session for the audience, will be hosted by the exhibition’s curator Renée Mussai of Autograph ABP, together with Michael McMillan, author and curator of The West Indian Front Room and the recent Rockers, Soulheads & Lovers: Sound Systems back in da Day.
