Sunday 6 September 2026

Discover the remarkable women who helped shape Brixton’s rich history of activism, creativity and community on this fascinating guided walking tour exploring Black women’s contributions to social change in South London. Brixton’s Black Herstory: Sisterhood, Solidarity and Resistance uncovers the lives of pioneering women whose courage, determination and leadership transformed both their local communities and wider British society.

Beginning at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning on Railton Road, the walk explores the stories of influential figures including Olive Morris, Claudia Jones and members of the Brixton Black Women’s Group, highlighting their role in campaigns for racial justice, housing, education, feminism and community empowerment. Participants will discover sites connected with protest movements, grassroots organisations and the women who helped define Brixton as a centre of Black political and cultural life.

Led by Radical Routes: Alternative History Walks, the tour combines local history, storytelling and social commentary to reveal often overlooked chapters of Black British history. Along the route, participants will explore how sisterhood, solidarity and collective action helped shape responses to racism, inequality and social injustice while celebrating the enduring legacy of Black women in Brixton.
