Discover the stories behind Charles Gimpel’s photographs of Black life in 1960s Brixton in a conversation led by public historian Kelly Foster.
Gimpel was a successful West End art dealer who repeatedly visited Brixton to photograph Black families in their homes, on their doorsteps, at weddings and in local pubs.
His photographs suggest the familiarity of a friend rather than the distance of a commercial photographer. They preserve everyday moments and personal relationships within the community.
Kelly Foster will be joined by Gimpel’s son, Charles Beauchamp, and exhibition curator Jon Newman to discuss the photographer, his connections with Brixton and the people represented in his work.
The event accompanies the exhibition From Mayfair to Brixton: The Photography of Charles Gimpel at Lambeth Archives and forms part of Lambeth Libraries’ Black History Month programme.
