Jazz Legends

Saturday 16 July

The Jazz Cafe and the Southbank Centre present a pantheon of cosmic and spiritual jazz musicians, including Sun Ra Arkestra, Norman Connors, Jean Carne & Gary Bartz.

Bobby Lyle and the Starship Orchestra are also playing, joined by Marva King, and Gary Bartz is the evening’s special guest.

Cosmic jazz masters Sun Ra Arkestra and their catalogue of over 150 albums, unique philosophy and legendary live performances live on under the direction of band leader Marshall Allen.

Jazz drummer, composer, arranger and producer Norman Connors worked with Archie Shepp on 1967 release The Magic of Ju-Ju. He went on to work with Pharoah Sanders and released jazz albums on the Cobblestone Label before producing R&B hits throughout the 70s.
Jean Carne has recorded and shared the stage with artists, producers and songwriters including Stevie Wonder, Lou Rawls, The O’Jays, Earth, Wind & Fire and MFSB. When living in New York, she met and married jazz pianist Doug Carn and partnered with him in what would become a trendsetting jazz-fusion tradition. Gary Bartz joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1965, recording Soulfinger with the group. In 1970, Bartz was asked by Miles Davis to perform with his band at the Isle of Wight Festival. Bartz’ own group, Ntu Troop (after the Bantu word for ‘unity’), blended soul, funk, African folk music, hard bop and avant-garde jazz on albums including I’ve Known Rivers and Other Bodies, Music Is My Sanctuary, Love Affair and Home.

Presented in partnership with the Jazz Cafe
