Malika’s Poetry Kitchen: Friends and Family

Saturday 30 October 2021

Join Malika Booker and members of her poetry collective as they celebrate the publication of their anthology Too Young, Too Loud, Too Different

Also appearing are Jill Abram, who has been director of Malika’s Poetry Kitchen since 2010, Nick Makoha, Yomi Ṣode, Kareem Parkins-Brown, Katie Griffiths and Kostya Tsolakis.

Friendships begin, according to CS Lewis, when someone says to another: ‘What? You too? I thought I was the only one!’ And that’s how Malika’s Poetry Kitchen began in 2001.

Two friends, Malika Booker and Roger Robinson, were young, Black poets being overlooked by the poetry establishment but serious about their work and dedicated to their craft.

They invited friends to join them around Malika’s kitchen table in Brixton every Friday night to inspire and encourage each other, share ideas and workshop poems.

Twenty years later, this diverse collective is still meeting on Friday nights and has nurtured some of the finest poets to emerge in the UK this century.

In this event you can enjoy conversations and poems cooked up in the Kitchen.
