The Forgotten Generations is a powerful exhibition at Black Cultural Archives celebrating the lives, service and enduring legacy of Black African and Caribbean veterans who served in the Royal Air Force. Created by RAF veteran Donald Campbell, the exhibition shines a light on stories that have too often been overlooked in Britain’s military history.
Through striking portraits by renowned photographer Vanley Burke, personal testimonies, archive material and multimedia displays, visitors are introduced to the remarkable experiences of Black servicemen and women who served their country with distinction while often facing prejudice and discrimination during and after their military careers.
Previously exhibited at the Library of Birmingham and the RAF Museum Midlands, The Forgotten Generations explores themes of service, migration, identity, resilience and belonging, ensuring that the contributions of Black veterans become a recognised part of Britain’s shared history.
Presented at Black Cultural Archives in Brixton, the exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the personal histories of men and women whose courage and commitment helped shape both the Royal Air Force and modern Britain. Suitable for all ages, it provides an inspiring and thought-provoking experience that encourages reflection on remembrance, equality and the importance of preserving community heritage.
