Ella Fitzgerald would have turned 100 this year. To celebrate, an evening of poetry and spoken word inspired by jazz is being held at Write On, a Leicester Writers’ Showcase on Wednesday 18 October 2017, 7-9pm at the Central Library in Leicester. Leicester poets and spoken work artists will be reading and performing poems and spoken word pieces inspired by jazz and to celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s legacy during Black History Month.
City Librarian Matthew Vaughan says, “We launched the Leicester Writers’ Showcase in January 2017 and are pleased to say the Writers’ Showcase is now a regular fixture in the Leicester Central Library calendar. On a personal note, working in partnership with highly motivated and talented people to put on these events makes Leicester Writers’ Showcase one of the most exciting projects I’ve been involved in since joining Leicester libraries.”

The Leicester Writers’ Showcase started in January 2017 and aims to highlight Leicester’s literary talent and create space for conversation between readers and writers. Titles that have been featured as part of the series so far include: Siobhan Logan’s “Philae’s Book of Hours” (ESA, 2016), Mahsuda Snaith’s “Things We Thought We Knew” (Transworld, 2017), Julia Herdman’s “Sinclair” (2017), Andrew Bannister’s “Iron Gods” (Transworld, 2017), Marianne Whiting’s “Shieldmaiden” (Accent Press, 2016) Carol Leeming’s “The Declamations of Cool Eye” (Dare to Diva Productions, 2017); the short story collection, “Lost and Found: Stories of Home” (Dahlia Publishing, 2015); and the poetry anthology, “Welcome to Leicester” (Dahlia Publishing, 2016).
