The Last Black Messiah

Tuesday 28 April – Saturday 16 May 2026

The Last Black Messiah, written by Emeka Agada and directed by award-nominated theatre-maker Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller, comes to The Jack Studio Theatre in Brockley for a limited London run.

This intense political drama stars Emeka Agada (Reacher, Nurses, Ransom) as Dr. Oko, a Black revolutionary leader and former Howard University professor awaiting execution for his role in a political uprising.

Opposite him is Kenneth Butler (The Life and Death of Martin Luther King, Pericles, Jane Eyre), who plays Asante, a journalist and former student returning to interview the man who once inspired him.

Set in early 1990s America, the play unfolds during a tense reunion between mentor and student. What begins as a formal interview quickly turns into a searching confrontation as past decisions, political ideals and personal loyalties are brought to the surface.

As the two men revisit their shared history, the play explores difficult questions about revolution, responsibility and legacy. Their exchange reveals the emotional cost of political struggle and the burden carried by those who challenge power.

Presented by BlackPen Productions and Black Bat Productions, this intimate two-hander drama places the audience at the centre of a gripping conversation about justice, identity and how history ultimately remembers those who try to change it.
