Fists of Defiance: Tommie Smith 50 years on from Mexico ’68

Fri 12 October 2018 18:15 – 20:00

The ‘Black power salute’ of African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during the 200m medal ceremony at the 1968 Mexico Olympics is one of our age’s iconic images. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, The University of Manchester’s School of Social Sciences and the Runnymede Trust are delighted to welcome Tommie Smith to Manchester.
As our sixth ‘Arthur Lewis Lecture’, we will be screening a short documentary about the event and its aftermath, followed by a discussion between Tommie Smith and Michelle Moore – winner of the 2016 UK Precious Award for ‘Outstanding Woman in Sport’ and a consultant, educator, strategist and former athlete.
After the discussion, there will be an opportunity for Q&A from the audience and, from around 8pm, a short reception in the foyer where wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be available.
Accessibility
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible (wheelchair spaces are at the back/top of the theatre) and a hearing loop will be in operation. For more information on accessibility, go to the DisabledGo page for University Place. The nearest public disabled parking is in the Booth Street West carpark and is free of charge for blue badge holders. If you have a blue badge and need a closer disabled parking spot, please contact the event organiser several days in advance so that a space can be reserved.
