GDI Lecture Series – Understanding migration dynamics in the Horn of Africa

Wednesday 16th November

The Horn of Africa (HoA) is a region with a long history of crises, including conflict, natural disasters, and mass displacement of people both within and across its borders.

It is also one of the most diverse in term of cultures, ethnicities, and religions of the African continent. Since 2016, Professor Laura Hammond has led the Research and Evidence Facility research consortium, which has been conducting research to generate a better understanding of the drivers of instability, migration, and displacement in the greater Horn of Africa.

The consortium has explored the connections and distinctions between regular and irregular migration and displacement on one hand, and conditions of conflict, insecurity, and underdevelopment on the other.

As the project draws to a close, this lecture will highlight key findings and their implications for the migration policies of local and international actors.
