Paul Crooks is a trailblazer in Black genealogy. In the 1990s, he was one of the first to successfully trace his ancestry from North London back to ancestors enslaved on a plantation in North America, and then to West Africa. His books, including Ancestors and A Tree Without Roots, have inspired countless others to begin their own ancestry journeys, while his work continues to shine a light on the hidden histories of Black British families.
