Tracing Black and British Roots: Who do you think you are?

Sunday 7 July

Join Paul Crooks for a captivating account of how he traced his ancestors through public records, uncovering the names of two forebears who were captured off the West Coast of Africa and enslaved on a sugar plantation in the then British colony of Jamaica

Paul’s family tree spans back six generations, a journey that took him 200 years from London to the Gold Coast, via Jamaica.

In this masterclass, Paul will share insights from his journey of tracing his roots. He will discuss how he researched documents found in libraries, archives, and repositories to reconstruct the historical narrative of his ancestors who were enslaved in former British colonies in the Caribbean and North America.

You’ll gain insights into:

  • How to discover who you are and where you’re from.
  • How ancestors, enslaved in Jamaica in the run up to abolition, were part of a collective, unstoppable force for change on a grand scale.
