Ronald Moody: Sculpting Life

Thursday 1st October 2026 to Sunday 28th February 2027

This major exhibition brings the work of Jamaican-born, West London-based sculptor Ronald Moody back to the city where he lived, worked and carved for more than half a century.

Touring from The Hepworth Wakefield, Ronald Moody: Sculpting Life explores the breadth of Moody’s creative practice across sculpture, poetry, writing and audio broadcasting. It offers an expansive view of one of the twentieth century’s most important yet historically overlooked artists.

Initially trained as a dentist, Moody was inspired to teach himself carving after encountering Egyptian sculpture at the British Museum. He went on to develop a distinctive sculptural language that combined Modernism, spirituality and a deep engagement with global mythology.

From the wooden figures he created during the 1930s to his post-war experiments with concrete and resin, the exhibition traces Moody’s continually evolving practice. It follows his journey through his early years in London and Paris and explores how his wartime experiences shaped some of his most powerful work.

The exhibition also includes Legacy Projects, a programme of contemporary commissions created for Orleans House Gallery. New works by Kedisha Coakley, Dexter McLean and Kat Francois respond to Moody’s ideas and artistic legacy, continuing the conversation about his place within British and international art history.

Ronald Moody: Sculpting Life is organised by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with Orleans House Gallery, with artistic and curatorial collaboration from Kedisha Coakley. It is supported by Arts Council England and the Weston Loan Fund.
