Bun & Cheese Windrush tea party , Poetry recital and story collection

Saturday 21 June

The Bun & Cheese Windrush Tea Party at Bruce Castle Museum & Archive promises a vibrant afternoon of storytelling, poetry, and shared memories, all set against the backdrop of community warmth and cultural pride.

This unique gathering invites attendees to celebrate the voices and experiences of the Windrush generation through creativity, food, and conversation.

The day will feature powerful poetry performances by THE WORD Writing Group, offering reflections rooted in heritage, migration, and resilience. A Speed Writing Workshop, led by Bevali Mckenzie, will invite guests to contribute to a collaborative piece inspired by Windrush stories—an opportunity to create something meaningful together that will be performed at a later event.

No Windrush celebration would be complete without food that speaks to shared history. Guests will enjoy a traditional Windrush-inspired tea party, complete with bun and cheese, fruit punch, and home-baked cakes, served on the museum lawn. It’s a moment to relax, connect, and honour the flavours and memories that have travelled across generations.

The event also promises plenty of fun and community spirit, with games, music, and space for lively conversation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own stories—whether passed down or lived—to share in this intergenerational space of reflection and joy.
