BlackFest Festival 2021: Spoken Word Poetry Night

BlackFest Festival 2021 presents a collection of local spoken word poets performing live @ The Hope Street Theatre.

 

We have selected amazing 4 spoken word poets that are bringing different perspectives on social parallels raising awareness on mental health and disparities between races.

Claire Beerjeraaz is a poet, performer arts psychotherapist – Her poetry will feature works on parallels on white and black women. A new report has shown that Black women in the UK are four times as likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth than white women. She has written about the constant silencing and lack of respect that society often smites onto women, particularly Black women.

David Loy is an actor, performer and spoken word poet. His work features a commentary on the life experience of himself and others who are bound by socioeconomic and ethnic disadvantage. The parallels of the outer and inner dynamics of his life and experiences will raise much needed awareness on mental health. Black men often suffer in silence in the year March 2020, Black people were more than 4 times as likely as White people to be detained under the Mental Health Act – 321.7. David aims to break the silence and raise awareness around black men’s mental health.
