Mayor of London Recruitment Drive for Young Black Men

Monday 27 September - Wednesday 29 September 2021

A 3-day event by Greater London Authority (GLA) and The Equal Group showcasing career opportunities in construction for young Black men.

The Workforce Integration Network (WIN) was established in 2018 as part of the Mayor’s Strategy for Social Integration to improve pathways for under-represented groups in the workplace. The WIN programme is currently focused on supporting young Black men aged 16 to 24 years into significant and substantial employment in London. The WIN Design Lab supports large London based employers from the construction and infrastructure sectors to build diverse and inclusive workplaces, and specifically tackle the underrepresentation of young Black men in their workforce.

Why young Black men?

Young Black Men have some of the highest unemployment rates in London with 33% out of work and seeking employment, compared to 15% of young White Men.

The GLA Design Labs is a 12-month programme supporting large Construction and Infrastructure businesses to tackle the underrepresentation of young Black men aged 16 to 24 years in the sectors. This recruitment drive is a major part of this programme, and aims to match young Black men with vacancies within the construction and infrastructure sector.

Recruitment Drive

Following the success of the last Drive in July, our upcoming 3-day Recruitment Drive is designed to support individuals identifying as both Black and male, aged between 16-24, who are interested in careers in construction in London. If this is you, the event will give you an opportunity to:

• Learn about exciting and impactful opportunities within the construction sector from the country’s leading companies

• Engage directly with current employees, apprentices and graduates from each of the participating companies

• Prepare for each company’s recruitment process through interactive workshops and Q&A sessions

Elgibility Criteria

People who identify as both Black and male, and are aged between 16-24.

Why should I attend?

There will be a wide variety of different organisations attending from the construction sector, alongside a variety of roles being advertised. We know that online applications can be very daunting. By attending this event, you get the chance to hear directly from organisations – know which jobs and companies you like the sound of, and come away feeling empowered to get started with your application.

Ultimately, you will understand what specific skills employers are looking for, learn about different types of opportunities available, and most of all, see how a career in construction or infrastructure can be the right fit for you!
