Film screening: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Following sell-out successes in 2010 and 2011, Southbank Centre presents 2001: A Space Odyssey with live music.
Conducted by Robert Ziegler, the magisterial forces of London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Voices join together to perform the film’s extraordinary soundtrack, as a live accompaniment to a screening at Royal Festival Hall.
Long recognised as one of the greatest works of science fiction of all time, and a landmark of 1960s cinema, Stanley Kubrick’s seminal film is celebrated for its technological realism, its innovative Oscar-winning special effects and its bold use of music.
It brought worldwide fame and recognition to both Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra and the music of Gyorgy Ligeti, and it created one of cinema’s most memorable musical images, as spaceships orbit planets to the strains of Johann Strauss’ Blue Danube waltz.
