In a special afternoon concert, the all-star players of John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London make their Bristol debut.
The concert opens with the show-stopping opening number PatterSongs, originally commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic from Liverpool-born composer Kenneth Kesketh, described by BBC Music Magazine as “a composer at the height of his considerable powers”.
After winning BBC Young Musician of the Year playing Shostakovich’s first cello concerto, Kanneh-Mason joins forces with Sinfonia of London to perform Shostakovich’s intricate, imaginative and reference-laden Cello Concerto No.2, written originally for the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
The Orchestra’s sound is a match made in heaven with the music of Rachmaninov and they continue their series of his symphonies, giving audiences a chance to hear his rarely heard Symphony No.1. John Wilson believes its neglect during and after the composer’s life is wholly unjustified and, with the help of their own brand-new performing edition, Sinfonia of London aim to demonstrate why it deserves to sit as a masterpiece alongside the better-known second and third symphonies, which Sinfonia of London have recently released on record to great critical acclaim.
