Noughts & Crosses brings Malorie Blackman’s groundbreaking novel to the stage in a powerful and emotionally charged production. Set in an alternate world divided by rigid racial hierarchy, the story follows Sephy, a privileged Cross, and Callum, a determined Nought, whose bond grows from childhood friendship into a love that defies the rules of their society. Their connection places them at the centre of a world riven by prejudice, unrest and rising political tension.
This stage adaptation by Sabrina Mahfouz captures the heart of Blackman’s story — a tale about identity, justice and the choices that shape us. Directed by Esther Richardson, the production combines sharp dialogue, dynamic staging and a strong ensemble cast to bring to life a world where every decision carries consequences and where hope struggles to survive against the weight of systemic division.
As the political climate becomes increasingly volatile, Sephy and Callum are forced to confront difficult truths about themselves, their families and the society they live in. Their story becomes a poignant reminder of how systems of power can fracture lives, but also how love and compassion can challenge the narratives we inherit.
Produced by Pilot Theatre in association with Northern Stage, this acclaimed adaptation continues to resonate with audiences for its honesty, urgency and emotional depth. Bold, gripping and deeply human, Noughts & Crosses remains one of the most impactful contemporary stories exploring race, inequality and the courage it takes to resist a broken world.
