The opportunity, based at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, forms part of a continued effort to address structural inequalities within higher education and expand diversity in academic research.
Now in its fifth year, the fellowship is designed to nurture research excellence while helping to build a stronger pipeline of future academic talent.
A targeted investment in talent
The one-year postdoctoral fellowship offers a salary between £37,694 and £46,049, alongside a package of financial and professional support. This includes relocation funding, dedicated research and training resources, and access to further grant opportunities beyond the initial fellowship period.
Successful applicants will also benefit from mentorship and career development support, with the option to take up a College Post-Doctoral Associate position at Jesus College, Cambridge.
The role is open to researchers across all areas of archaeology, broadly defined, including human evolution, heritage, and museum studies. There are no restrictions on methodology, time period, or geographic focus.
Tackling inequality in academia
The fellowship has been created in recognition of the persistent structural inequalities that continue to affect Black researchers within higher education and academic careers. The programme aims to support underrepresented scholars in building their research portfolios and progressing within academia.
Applications are open to individuals who self-identify as being of Black identity or heritage, including Black British, Black African, Black Caribbean, African American, and those of dual heritage backgrounds. Candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.
Who can apply
Applicants must typically have completed their PhD within the past seven years and will be expected to propose a clearly defined research project to be developed during the fellowship.
The position is fixed-term, with funding currently available until 30 September 2027, and the successful candidate is expected to begin the role in October 2026 or shortly thereafter.
The fellowship is open to candidates of any nationality, although applicants must have, or be able to obtain, the right to work in the UK.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the University of Cambridge recruitment system. Candidates are advised to review the full application guidance before applying.
The closing date for applications is midnight (UK time) on Monday 25 May 2026.
