MOBBO – Music of Black British Origin & More opens October with an evening celebrating the sounds, stories and cultural legacy of Black British music.
Taking place at Triplex Sports Club in Birmingham, the event has been created specifically to celebrate Black History Month 2026, inviting audiences to enjoy music while reflecting on the people and communities that have helped shape Black British culture.
Black British music has never belonged to a single genre. Over generations it has developed through the meeting of African, Caribbean, American and British influences, producing distinctive movements spanning reggae, lovers rock, soul, jazz, funk, jungle, garage, grime and contemporary R&B.
MOBBO places that musical heritage at the centre of the evening, combining entertainment with the stories and experiences behind the sounds. Rather than simply presenting a night of familiar songs, the event aims to recognise Black music as part of Britain’s wider cultural history.
Among the announced performers is Alvin Davis, with further music and entertainment forming part of a six-hour programme running from early evening into the night.
Birmingham provides an especially appropriate setting. Generations of African-Caribbean communities have helped shape the city’s musical identity, from reggae and sound-system culture to soul, ska, jazz and contemporary Black British music.
Those histories are also connected to community spaces, clubs and grassroots events where new music could develop outside the mainstream before reaching wider audiences.
Celebrating Black History Month: MOBBO – Music of Black British Origin & More offers an opportunity to enjoy that legacy while recognising the creativity, resilience and innovation that have enabled Black British music to continually reinvent itself.
