Join a participatory Black History Month programme exploring community through observation, reflection, dialogue and memory.
Created around the Black History Month 2026 theme, Honouring Our Communities, this series invites participants to think about the meaning of community and the people, places and experiences that create a sense of belonging.
Rather than following a traditional lecture format, each session will be shaped by participation and conversation. Those attending will be encouraged to observe, reflect, share memories and listen to the experiences of others.
The sessions will begin with a simple but important question:
What comes to your mind when you hear the word “community”?
There is no right or wrong answer. Every participant is welcome to contribute their ideas, memories and personal understanding of what community means to them.
The programme offers an opportunity to consider how communities are created, how they support people and how their stories can be remembered and honoured.
Participants may wish to reflect on family, friendship, faith, neighbourhoods, heritage, culture, migration, shared experiences or the individuals whose everyday actions make a difference to other people.
The event is available in two formats. People can attend the in-person sessions at Peckham Library on 8th and 9th October or join the online Zoom conversations taking place every Monday from 5th to 26th October.
Entry is free. Anyone wishing to join the Zoom sessions should contact the organiser for the meeting link and joining instructions.
